Taste the waste!
Food waste is a major problem that affects everyone. According to the FAO, approximately one-third of all food produced globally is wasted every year. This is a significant amount of food, especially when you consider that there are millions of people around the world who go hungry every day.
There are many reasons why food is wasted:
- overproduction
- spoilage
- consumer behavior
- fruits or vegetables aren’t in perfect condition
I have been wondering what I can do to improve this situation. Through Foodsharing e.V., I have contacted companies and convinced them to provide their excess food to the organization instead of disposing of it. I also regularly address the issue of food waste in my personal environment and strive to raise awareness about food waste among those around me.Of course, I have also organized several pick-ups of food from businesses.
Now, over 12,500 businesses cooperate, where 83 million kilograms of food have been saved from waste so far. Approximately 5,700 additional pick-ups take place daily. Other countries are now also part of the movement, which started in Germany. I hope this is just the beginning and that I can continue to contribute to reducing food waste.
